First Hunt of the 2022 Bobcat Pursuit Season

A video of a recent hunt + some sad news about my lead dog.

The Oregon bobcat pursuit season opened last Thursday and Saturday was my first chance to get the dogs out. You’ll see that I’m only running two dogs—Coulee and Roux—and as I explain within the first few minutes, there’s a very sad reason for this.

I’ll write about this more in a future article, but unfortunately, my old finished bobcat dog, Whiskey, who was given to me by my mentor, passed away a few weeks ago. She was nearly 14 years old and passed peacefully in her sleep. I miss her dearly and now there is a huge hole in my pack that I’m hoping Coulee and Roux will fill.

I’m just glad I was able to write a book about her before she moved on.

After hunting a full season with Whiskey, I’m confident that Coulee at least knows what a bobcat is now. More importantly, Whiskey helped ME gain a serious education in the ways of the bobcat and what a finished rig-to-tree dog looks like.

This season is going to be very interesting. I know I’m going to face challenges I never could have anticipated, but I’m excited to see what Coulee and Roux are capable of in the bobcat woods. They are both incredible dogs, each in their own special ways, and I know they have greatness inside of them.

There’s another secret I’ve been holding onto that I haven’t shared with the world yet that is going to make this season REALLY interesting. More on that soon.

One of my big goals for this season is to document my hound hunting endeavors via video and make vlogs about it for YouTube. My wife is letting me borrow her really awesome little camera that she took with her to Africa, and I’ve been getting more comfortable with it. I’m also learning a lot about editing and really enjoying the process of putting these little videos together.

With that, I hope you enjoy this first hunting vlog that I created available here on Hound on the Run as well as on YouTube.

I totally understand if you aren’t a fan of YouTube, but if you are, would you be willing to subscribe to my channel and share it with a friend? Heck, maybe you’re even up for leaving a comment. One of my biggest overall goals with all of this is to cast hound hunting in a positive light, and I feel I have a good handle on how to do that through different forms of media. All I’m asking is that you help me spread the word.

I appreciate all the kind words everyone has shared with me about my new book and I hope everyone who’s purchased it is enjoying it. It truly means the world to me!

Until next time,

Niklas
